Thousands of Tesla Model Y cars are being recalled in the US over loose bolts in the second low seats.
According to a recent report by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the bolts that were securing second-row seat back frames in a number of Tesla’s 2022-23 Model Y vehicles may not have been securely tightened.
‘A loose seat frame bolt may reduce the seat belt system’s performance, increasing the risk of injury during a crash,’ said the NHTSA in a letter to Tesla.
The safety issue could be potentially affecting nearly 3,500 cars, said the report.
In December last year, an operator in Tesla’s Fremont manufacturing facility identified the issue in a Model Y. The company started performing risk assessments well into this year.
Tesla said that it was not aware of any injuries or deaths that may be related to such conditions.
The company’s service centres will inspect and tighten the bolts free of charge in 3,470 vehicles upon recall.
The NHTSA said affected owners are expected to be notified of the recall by mail starting on 25 April 2023.
This is the second time in less than a month that Elon Musk’s electric carmaker is recalling some of its Model Y vehicles.
Two weeks ago, Tesla recalled more than 362,000 US vehicles to update its Full Self-Driving (FSD) Beta software.
The move came after US regulators said that the driver assistance system did not adequately adhere to traffic safety laws and could cause crashes.
The company said it disagreed with NHTSA’s analysis but ultimately agreed to resolve the issue with a free over-the-air software update.
