Although some naysayers might class Snapchat as cheugy, there are buckets of cool features that prove the social media app is anything but.
It’s no secret that the likes of Facebook and Instagram have taken some inspiration from the picture-sharing app, introducing their own version of stories and enabling access to flattering filters.
However, Snapchat still has some exclusive features to help you get creative with your selfies, including video reversing and multiplayer games.
Here are some hacks to use in your next Snapsterpieces.
How to reverse a video on Snapchat
Want to create a video that makes it look like you’re magically rising out of the pool, or you’ve used the force to bring the TV remote to you?
Well, it couldn’t be easier with the reversing tool on Snapchat.
You just have to film your mini-movie a normal.
Once you’re happy with your Steven Spielberg short film, simply swipe to the right.
You’ll have to swipe around eight times to get to the reverse filter, which can easily be identified with a symbol of three arrows pointing to the left.
If you’re happy with how it looks, just post it straight to your story or share it with individual friends.
Remember that you can also save the video straight to your camera roll by pressing the icon of the arrow pointing down to a line – this can be found in the bottom left corner of the screen.
You will then be able to share your movie via a messaging app, or perhaps onto your Instagram feed.
Other cool Snapchat features you might not know about…
Slow down/speed up
While swiping across to find the reverse feature, you will first encounter the speed up and slow down functions.
These do just what you’d imagine – they either speed up or slow down your video.
The features have hilarious results, as the slow down feature makes all sounds very sluggish and deep. The speed-up feature can make you sound like Alvin and the Chipmunks on a sugar-high.
The slow down feature is identified by the snail icon, and the speed up one by a rabbit.
Are you ever in a bar or cafe and hear a catchy tune, but can’t seem to remember the name?
Snapchat has a feature for that.
Music-identifying platform Shazam is built into the app.
Shazam, which was bought by Apple in 2017, identifies songs based on an audio fingerprint based on a time-frequency graph called a spectrogram. It uses a smartphone built-in microphone to gather a sample of audio being played, and uses that to work out what the song is.
When you hear a song you like, just open up the Snapchat app, then press and hol the screen.
A box will magically pop up with the name of the song and the artist.
Snapchat’s scanning function goes much further than songs. The app also allows you to identify car brands, plant types, dog breeds, and more.
Explore the options by pressing the smiley face icon, and selecting ‘scan’.
We tested the scanning feature ourselves.
Unfortunately, we didn’t have a dog in the office to test it out on – but the app did accurately identify a Google Image of an Alaskan Malamute that we pulled up.
The app also managed to identify the brand of the tin of coffee on the desk – with a breakdown of the health facts.
However, the AI is not perfect just yet, as it identified this coffee cup as a chihuahua.
Identifying a tune is not the end of Snapchat’s musical abilities.
You can also add music to your snap.
Once you’ve taken your picture or video, simply tap the music symbol, and then scroll through the available songs.
Are you mathematically challenged? Then this free feature is ideal for you.
Snapchat can actually help you solve maths problems.
Simply tap the smiley face icon, click on ‘scan’.
With any luck, the answer will appear before your very eyes.
Where was this feature when we were in school?
We’re not sure if this feature is cool, or a bit reminiscent of Joe from You, but Snapchat allows you and your friends to share your location in real-time with one another.
Press the location icon (which looks like a pin) in the bottom left corner of the screen to open the app.
If you have created a Bitmoji – which is an avatar of yourself you can make on the app – then your little character will appear in your location. You can see where your friends’ Bitmojis are, too.
A bit too creepy for your liking? You can easily hide your location in your settings.
Tap your profile icon in the upper-left corner, then tap the gear icon in the upper-right corner to access your settings. Scroll down to the Who Can section and tap See My Location.
You can then choose to share your location with all of your Snapchat friends, all except a set few, or just a specific handful of pals.
Or, go fully off the radar by taping on Ghost Mode.
When Ghost Mode is enabled, nobody can see your location.
In the menu that appears, set a time limit of three or 24 hours for Ghost Mode or keep it on indefinitely.
You will still be able to see the locations of your friends who are not on Ghost Mode.
In 2019, Snapchat introduced multiplayer games onto its platform.
There are more and more games added to the app daily, and so it is worth regularly checking in to see what’s new.
The games are always fairly simple, such as moving your face to catch falling items on the screen. Your scores can then be added to your story or sent to your friends, who can choose to accept the challenge.
In the messaging section, there are some games that you can play live with friends in-app.
When you and your friend are both on the chat, tap the rocket item to launch a game.
Want to know if you’re a Gemini or a Scorpio?
Snapchat has a feature that allows you to view your Astrological profile.
You will need the latest version of the app to view it, so make sure there aren’t any updates you need to do before following these steps:
- Open Snapchat and tap your profile icon in the top left corner
- Undernearth your name, tap the purple zodiac sumbol
- You will be asked to enter information on your place and time of birth – once you’ve entered the correct details hit ‘Complete’
- To read your astrological profil, just tap the zodiac again
You can then swipe from left to right to read through the profile, as well as swipe up to find out more about different aspects of your astrological profile.
The app allows you to view your friends’ Astrological profiles and check your compatibility score.
To do this, you need to do the following:
- Go to your messages and click on your friends Bitmoji head
- Click on their highlighted zodiac sign next to their snap score
- Click on ‘view astrological compatibility’
Arguably the most famous thing about Snapchat is its vast array of features.
They are updated everyday, and so you might want to regularly check the app for the newest filters.
